The risk of Anemia in Dominica

The Ministry of Health is collaborating with Ministry of Agriculture to address the situation.

In the southeast communities of Dominica, the health department has identified anemia as a potential health risk problem. Some women in these communities are at risk of anemia. These women agreed that there was a need to come together and conduct a Farmer Field School.

The backyard garden approach is all about growing crops rich in iron and vitamins such as vegetables in your backyard. Anemia is a problem that can be resolved through increase intake of vegetables in ones diet. Therefore the Ministry of Health has seen the need to collaborate with the Ministry of Agriculture's extension staff to assist.

Mr Keian Stephenson, team leader of the Central Agriculture Region, is also an expert in the Farmer Field School approach and has teamed up with Mr. Joseph Blandford and the Southeast Extension Team to conduct this Farmer field school being held at the Laplaine Health Center. photos courtesy Mr. Keian Stephenson.
