14 Quick facts on climate change and agriculture

Quick facts on climate change and agriculture

 Fact 1: Climate change hits the world’s poorest hardest. 75% of the world’s poor rely on agriculture and natural resources for their livelihood.

 Fact 2: The world aims to achieve Zero Hunger by 2030; climate change is a challenge that must be addressed in order to continue the fight against hunger and achieve this goal.

 Fact 3: Some 25 percent of the negative economic impacts from climate-related disasters in developing countries are borne by the crop, livestock, fisheries and forestry sectors alone.

 Fact 4: FAO estimates that agricultural production must rise by about 60% by 2050 in order to feed a larger and generally richer population. Climate change is putting this objective at risk.

 Fact 5: Livestock contributes to nearly two thirds of agricultural greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, and 78% of agricultural methane emissions.

 Fact 6: Decreasing the emissions from livestock production has the potential to reduce baseline by around 30%.

 Fact 7: Global food loss and waste generate 8% of total GHG emissions annually.  This is almost equivalent to the global road transport emissions. If food waste were a country, it would be the third largest emitting one in the world.

 Fact 8: Over 1/3 of food produced worldwide is lost or wasted. The global costs of food wastage are approximately USD 2.6 trillion per year, including USD 700 billion of environmental costs & USD 900 billion of social costs.

 Fact 9 : Carbon dioxide is not the only gas that contributes to climate change. Other gases include methane, which is emitted by rotting food and is 23 times more potent than carbon dioxide.

 Fact 10: Declining crop yields may already be a fact and decreases of 10 - 25% percent and more, may be widespread by 2050 (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, IPCC).

 Fact 11: By 2050, catches of main fish species are expected to decline by up to 40% in the tropics, where livelihoods, food and nutrition security strongly depend on the fisheries sector.

 Fact 12:  Deforestation and forest degradation still account for an estimated 10 - 11% of global GHG emissions.

 Fact 13: Climate change can transfer risks of food-borne diseases from one region to another, threatening public health in new ways.

 Fact 14: High temperatures, loss of wildlife species, rising sea levels, changing rainfall patterns, heat waves, stronger storms, wildfires & shrinking of arctic ice are few of the dangerous effects of climate change.
